Question Time?  Question Tapping!

I wonder if you’re like me? Sometimes I’m very decisive, and sometimes I’m not. In the wrong mood, I can dither for England, prevaricate till the cows come home. "Do I feel like going out / staying in? Should I walk dog now / walk dog later? Bite the bullet and join Twitter / put it off till tomorrow?” I can tolerate a certain amount of dithering, but eventually I annoy myself enough to raise two fingers and start tapping.

It’s remarkable what happens when you voice a question while tapping.

If you make a statement to yourself, such as “I don’t know if I want to do x,” nothing much happens. You don’t know, you recognize that you don’t know, and that’s it. If you ask a question, however, you’re innately programmed (with or without tapping) to try to answer it: if I randomly ask “have you ever seen a purple cow?” your mind will go there, whether you like it or not.

If you TAP a question — such as “how on earth can I resolve this issue?” — you open up a hotline to your subconscious and very quickly the relevant issues come popping up, followed by answers.

I use tapping to explore all manner of questions: “How can I figure out how to...” “Should I...?” “Do I want to...?”  “Who could help me with this...?” “Where can I go to...?” If I feel low, and I’m not even sure what the issue is, I’ll go ahead and tap “what’s my problem? Why do I feel low?”

I think of it as summoning up my own little genie; most of the time he’s sitting there, swinging his legs, bored, waiting to be given a task. If I make a statement, he just sighs. If I ask a question, he’s delighted: he’s been given a job! He jumps right up and goes looking for the answer. And if I’m simultaneously tapping, it’s as if the little genie is turbo-charged!

A client of mine wanted to find a new creative outlet, but wasn’t sure what: drawing? Painting? She had no idea. So we tapped and asked questions. “Jewellery” came up loud and clear. She promptly took a course. Then she founded her own business. And recently she was asked to do some pieces for the Oscars!

Next time you’re going round in circles, try this: combine a) posing the issue as a question and b) tapping round the key* points.


*Key tapping points: Eyebrow, side of eye, under eye, under nose, under chin, collarbone, under arm, top of head. (See photo in my 30 March 2015 blog.)

How to Stop the Time Pressures

It seems there’s never enough time to do to squeeze everything in. As a nation, we’re overworked, overstretched.  It’s stressing us out and putting our health and relationships at risk.

Pressures at work, problems at home, too much to do, too little time to do it.  Your to-do list keeps building up, like the email you promised to send last week and can’t seem to find the time for, or that pile of laundry in the back bedroom that you still haven’t got around to.  There seems no end to it.  Your life is out of kilter.  

We think it’s stress we need to get to grips with.  Sort out the stress and magically, everything in our lives will come together and we’ll feel great again.  There are numerous ways to ease stress, from meditation to mindfulness, from diet and exercise, through to breathing and forgiveness techniques.

These address the stress directly.  Look a little deeper, though, and you’ll discover there’s more to it than that….

Behind so much stress are three dilemmas that keep you locked in a reactive and stressful state:
  1. Time as a precious and limited resource.  You believe time is limited and become a slave to it, a victim of its relentless onward thrust.
  2. The second is your inability to say ‘No’ without feeling guilty.  This leads to work overload. 
  3. The third, and perhaps most important, is that you are not clear on your purpose.  Most work you do is not aligned with your soul’s calling, and leaves you unfulfilled

The result?  You take on far too much for far too many people, saying yes to everything and everyone to please them.  Most of it is trivia, stuff that brings you no real joy or fulfilment.  You desperately try to squeeze all this in to your diary, knowing at the outset that you simply don’t have enough time to get it all done.  Then, you resent having to do a lot of it.  You get more and more out of sorts, more and more frustrated and stressed out.

What if, instead of playing victim to time,  you took control of it?  

What if , instead of drifting through life, you knew and lived your purpose?

What if, instead of letting everyone push you about, you set boundaries based on who and what matters most to you?

Your life would be very different.  Just learning to say ‘No’, easily, gracefully and with real authority can make a real difference.  When someone asks you to do something and you know its not aligned with what really matters to you, say

“Thank you for asking”.  

This is important, as it acknowledges them and you and leaves you open to another request in future.  Then say,

“But that doesn’t work for me right now.”

That’s it.  No need for any explanations.  It works like magic.
