In my book, FENG SHUI AND MONEY, I explore the power of feng shui to bring new opportunities and prosperity into our lives with ancient principles.

We often think of feng shui in relationship to the inside our homes, and might overlook the importance of the outside of the building.

On a psychological level, the front of our home is our "face" to the world;  it determines not just how we appear, but also sends signals about what we deserve to receive.

On a deeper level, the way that energy approaches our home determines how opportunity will come to us.  The front path is considered the gateway to your home, and this is the metaphoric "path of prosperity."

As you start to prepare your home for winter, this is a great time to apply feng shui principles for the best flow of energy and opportunity.

Ideally, your path (or outer hallway, if you are in an a flat) should curve gently towards your front door, so the "chi" energy will meander and flow easily towards you, and not approach too fast and approach your front door too aggressively.

While it may not be so easy to change a sidewalk, or the hallway leading to the door of your flat, there are things you can do to enrich the energy that comes to you.

Outside, consider planting some shrubs or flowers along the way;  these will invite the energy and gently guide it towards you.  Traditionally, an odd number of plants on each side is thought to be more conducive, as odd numbers propel movement forward as they seek their resolution in an even sum.

If you live in an flat, consider a similar mindset when decorating the hallway outside your door.  We often think of these hallways as public spaces and leave them bare and unfriendly, but you can soften the energy with pictures on the walls, area rugs, and even narrow furniture by the walls.

And then, don't forget the front door itself.  The appearance of this door should invite guests and opportunities like a warm smile!

Place a Welcome mat at our threshold, and also consider putting your name plate by your door, to signal to the world that this is your domain.

As the cool weather approaches, this is the perfect time to think about making your home inviting to friends and new opportunities.  And, soon, the holiday season is the perfect time to enhance those decorations even more!
