HOW CAN YOU TRANSFORM YOUR REACTIONS?
When you want some coffee, chocolate or a cigarette, it is not just your mind telling you that you want some coffee, chocolate or a cigarette; it is also your body that says you want it.
When someone reacts to a spider, it is not only in the mind; the whole neurology reacts. This is common to a lot of problems. Your body is sending you a message. You can’t dispute that.
Most of the reasons for wanting to stop something uncontrollable such as an addiction or a fear are abstract concepts, such as wanting to be healthy, unperturbed or in control. It is difficult to counterbalance what your body tells you with an abstract concept such as "it is not good for your health", or "you should not be afraid of a spider”. In the moment, that does not feel like the truth.
Think about yourself:
What in your life don't you want?
To start, pick a reaction you have to something that irritates you. Perhaps it is something that someone does. Notice the physical reality of your response.
Now, ask yourself:
What would you like instead?
What kind of person do you want to be?
Notice the reaction in your body to what you do want. Right now, it is probably not as strong as the reaction you have to what you don't want. But, you have to make it just as strong, and then even stronger.
To do this, think of everything that is associated with the kind of person you want to be, so that you have a compound of emotions stacked towards feeling good about being that person.
Then, the next step is to go from what you don't want to what you do want. Not just in terms of thoughts, but also in terms of feelings. Think/feel what you don’t want, and then think/feel what you do want. Then, repeat the cycle.
The repetition of this process will make the intensity of the reaction to what you don't want diminish and the intensity of what you want increase.
You can try this process with something that is a mild irritation, but it will also work with strong reactions, even phobias or addictions, if done properly.
Evolution has made your body the go-between to the world and your mind. So try to feel what you want deeply in your body, instead of keeping your desires abstract and conceptual.
Feel it, and it will become a reality.
