What is it about our crazy hectic lives that we never seem to have enough time?  There’s always more to do in a day than there is time to do it.  That can often leave you stressed and feeling somehow as if you’re not good enough.  If you were, you’d get it all done, right?

Well, no.  Chances are you’ve taken on more than you can handle.  You simply can’t get it all done and it’s stressing you out. You may even resent the fact that you’ve agreed to do things that you really didn’t want to in the first place.

This is a big problem for so many of us, especially us women. We take on way more than we can handle, then stress out when we can’t squeeze it all in.  Why?

Because we fail to say ‘No’ to another request, another demand on our time and energy.  You know you don’t want to, yet can’t really say no.  It would be impolite.  It wouldn’t be nice, and you do want to be nice.

When it comes to managing and reclaiming your time, there are two things at play —
  • Your lack of time and energy
  • Your inability to say no
Here, we’ll deal with the first of these issues.  Making time for what matters to you.

There are any number of time management programmes you can do.  I’m sure you’ve had your fair share of them over the years as part of your corporate training.  You’ve dutifully followed them for  a few weeks, maybe longer, before you gave up on them.

Because they didn’t work.  Couldn’t work. Let’s face it,

You didn’t have time to learn it properly.

We need an approach that takes into account the fact that we have a lot of plates spinning in the air.  And need something that’s quick and easy.  Otherwise, we won’t find the time to learn it or do it properly.

Here’s one that works a treat.  It’s from a booklet I co-authored with the extraordinary woman’s coach, Susie Heath, called Stretching Time.

So whenever you’re stretched for time; when you’re starting to panic about meeting an impossible deadline; when you just want a bit more time for yourself…  Stretch Time.

Here’s How….

It’s quick and easy — takes no more than 60 seconds….

1. Close your eyes and breathe deeply.

2. Quiet your mind and focus on what you want to accomplish.

3. Place your hands together prayer fashion in front of your chest and continue to breathe deeply as you slowly move your hands apart, stretching time.

4. When they are outstretched to the sides of your body, open your eyes and resume your activity, knowing that there is time enough to finish it.

You’ll find many more easy tips on time and energy, and prioritising what matters to you in Career Shift Essentials, launching 2 September.   Keep an eye out for it.
