Hello! How well is your mindset supporting you today?
Let’s get your grey cells thinking about how your mindset impacts on your life.
A mindset is a person’s way of thinking that predetermines their response to, and interpretation of, situations.
Your mindset can be either Fixed (seeing situations as unchangeable) or oriented towards Growth (focussed on lifelong learning, with the desire to challenge, change and improve)
Now, ask yourself: Which one do you find yourself feeling comfortable with?
Here is my story:
I passed my driving test on the third go, and it took me 3.5 years between my 1st and my 3rd test.
When I failed for the first time, I interpreted that I was not meant to drive, so I changed my job to remove the need to drive.
It wasn’t until I began to feel dissatisfied with my job that I then began looking at why I was working there. I began questioning my beliefs about failure and why I was avoiding retaking my test.
I eventually realised that I was holding myself back in life, so I decided to change my situation. Then, when I failed a second time, I decided to go on a week’s intensive course and booked myself on another test straight after my course. The rest is history.....
I really like this quote: “Failure is information - we label it failure, but it's more like, 'This didn't work, I'm a problem solver, and I'll try something else."' (Carol Dweck, Prof. of Psychology at Stanford University).
Was Thomas Edison a genius for inventing the light bulb? Oh yes, but he achieved it because of his ambition and his mindset. Edison didn’t create the light bulb at his first attempt, but continued to learn how to solve his problem until he succeeded.
Here are some ways to create a healthy mindset:
A. Be clear about your values: Choose your top 5 from the list below, and then your Top Value from that short list. Use that Value to determine how you will commit to the path ahead:
B. Use Learning to Move Forward:
Think of a time when you did not get the outcome you wanted. Who did you blame and why? Can you see how this made you more stuck?
Now, explore what can you learn from that situation. Can you use learning to be more prepared in the future?
The future belongs to those with a growth mindset. By focussing on change, we’ll continue to develop and transform ourselves, regardless of what life throws at us. Embrace your Mindset!
